Sheriff: deaths in Oglethorpe Co were “suicide-accident”

The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office says the deaths of father and son whose bodies were found in a home near Lexington have been ruled as a case of suicide and accidental death.

The Sheriff’s Office is concluding their investigation of the deaths from earlier this week. We received information from the crime lab on critical forensic information needed to give the full picture of what transpired.

Andrew Colvard-Moneymaker (27) had been struggling with issues related to his mental health. From the scene and ballistic information Andrew was attempting to harm himself with a firearm. His father, Jason Colvard (51) appeared to be trying to intervene and stop him by grabbing him. Andrew was able to fire one round, striking himself in the head. The bullet exited Andrew and the same bullet also struck Jason killing both of them.

The case will be ruled a suicide and an accidental death. There is no evidence that Andrew intended to harm his father.

The family had 4 pit-bulls that lived in the house with them and 20-30 barn cats that lived outside. The four dogs are Beau, Cita, Gremlin and Buddy. They are currently at the Oconee County Animal Shelter. They will be adopted out. The cats are currently being caught and will also be up for adoption at the same facility. Police in Gainesville were, at last report, still trying to track down a suspect in a bank robbery: it happened Wednesday at a BB&T bank branch on Jesse Jewell Parkway in Gainesville. Bank workers say a man who claimed to have a gun made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. No injuries were reported.
