Tech tops Lady Dogs

Georgia Tech forced 24 turnovers in a 63-53 win against the Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team on Sunday at McCamish Pavilion.

Georgia falls to 2-2 this year, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-1. Taja Cole scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game as her and sophomore Gabby Connally finished with 10 points a piece. The Lady Bulldogs are now 35-6 all-time against Tech.

After Georgia built an early 5-0 lead to begin the game, Tech went on a 7-0 run to counter. Neither team shot particularly well in the first 10 minutes as Georgia hit just 30 percent and Tech knocked in 33 percent. Six turnovers proved costly for Georgia and the Yellow Jackets went into the second quarter with a 13-9 lead.

Tech’s advantage went to 24-11 in the second, but the Lady Bulldogs heated up from the field thanks to a baskets by Donnetta Johnson and a pair from Cole. Still, the Yellow Jackets led 31-23 at the half.

Georgia Tech went on a cold spell in the third quarter and was held without a basket the final 6:21 of the period. Two 3-pointers by Connally kept the Lady Bulldogs in the game as Tech went to the final quarter ahead 43-39.

The Yellow Jackets extended that lead to 12 and never looked back en route to the win.

Georgia now heads to Puerto Rico and will play Morgan State on Thursday.
