Tuesday elections: not close in Athens, razor thin in Watkinsville

Athens-Clarke County voters, as had been anticipated, gave overwhelming approval to the sales tax referendum that was on Tuesday’s election ballot: more than 78 percent of the vote was in favor of the $313 million one percent sales tax extension.

Voters in Watkinsville appear to have given former Oconee County state Rep Bob Smith a very narrow win over incumbent Dave Shearon in the Mayor’s race. In an election that will likely head for a recount, Smith has 402 votes, while Shearon has 400.

Connie Massey won reelection to her seat on the Watkinsville City Council. There will be a runoff for a seat on the City Council in Winterville: Amanda Mooney will face Mary Quinn.

On this day after the Tuesday elections, Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections member Jesse Evans holds a forum that focuses on voter rights in Athens: it’s set for 5:30 this afternoon at the Athens-Clarke County Library on Baxter Street.
