A tweet to reshape the race: Trump backs Kemp

Secretary of State Brian Kemp, the Athens Republican who is running for Governor, picks up the endorsement of President Donald Trump. The news from the President came in a Wednesday afternoon tweet from Mr. Trump, two days after Governor Nathan Deal through his support behind Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle. Kemp and Cagle face off in a July 24 runoff that is now just five days away. Early voting continues today and wraps up tomorrow, in Athens at the Elections Office on Washington Street in downtown Athens.

"I'm ecstatic about having his endorsement," Kemp told Channel 2's Aaron Diamant Wednesday.

Kemp said the endorsement came without warning, and he's proud to have received it.

"“I’m proud to have his support. I’m ready to stand with him. He’s standing with me," Kemp said. “I’m a lot like the president. I’m a business guy. I ran on cutting government regulation, streamlining government, not being the status quo, running against the establishment in a lot of ways.”
