Weekend funerals for Virginia Walker, Terrell Fuller

The funeral for Virginia Walker is set for Saturday, 1 o’clock at the Springfield Baptist Church on Fourth Street in Athens. The prominent Athens civil rights veteran died last week. Virginia Walker was 72 years old.

There is a funeral today in Hall County for a Gainesville girl killed in a car crash in Alabama: Daniela Gomez was 8 years old. The wreck happened last week near Montgomery Alabama. And the funeral for Alvin Ahmed is set for today: the body of the 25 year-old pharmacy intern was positively identified this week after it was discovered last month in a Lake in Gwinnett County. Ahmed, who graduated from the University of Georgia earlier this year, died in a suicide police say was staged to look like a homicide.

The remains of US Army Corporal Terrell Fuller are back in his native Stephens County, with a funeral set for Saturday: Fuller, from Toccoa, was 20 years old when he was killed in combat in Korea in 1951. His body arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport Thursday and was escorted by an honor guard back to Stephens County.

Decades after he disappeared in the Korean War, a Georgia soldier is back home.

The remains of Army Cpl. Terrell Fuller arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Thursday morning.

Channel 2's Lauren Pozen spoke with a veteran of the Patriot Guard who was there to help Fuller's family welcome him home.

“It is very emotional for the family. It was a surprise to them after 67 years that he is coming home,” Doug Smith said.

Fuller's remains were found years ago in Hawaii, but it wasn't until this year the Army was able to identify him with the help of DNA testing.

The procession headed to his hometown of Toccoa, Georgia, where he will be laid to rest on Saturday. The day would have been his 88th birthday.

It was an emotional morning for those who came to pay their respects.

“It means a lot to all of these guys out here. We are here to honor and respect our heroes,” Smith said.
