Kentucky man charged when aunt dies after being hit by concrete block

EVARTS, Ky. — A Kentucky man is accused of hitting his aunt on the head with a concrete block during an argument, which led to the woman’s death early Tuesday, authorities said.

According to the Kentucky State Police, Derrick Adams, 35, of Evarts, was charged with first-degree assault, according to arrest records. Adams may face more charges in the death of Sherry Brashear, 56, WTVQ reported.

Adams is being held in the Harlan County Detention Center on $15,000 full-cash bail, the Harlan Enterprise reported.

Officials with the Kentucky State Police were called to a residence in Evarts around 8:40 p.m. on Monday, WTVQ reported.

In a news release, state troopers said Adams had gotten into an argument with Brashear and started “physically assaulting her before he struck her in the head with a cinder block.”

Brashear was flown from the scene to Pikeville Medical Center, where she died at 2:28 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the KSP.

“We have one individual now who’s deceased and another individual who’s in jail so it’s just a very unfortunate incident that occurred within this family and now they’re going to have to deal with this unfortunate situation from now on,” Shawn Jacobs, public affairs spokesperson for the Kentucky State Police, told WYMT. “Right now we’re still trying to investigate to figure out exactly what led up to the verbal argument. Why it became so violent so quickly and why this individual took a cinderblock to his aunts head.”
