Bulldogs face CSU today

ATHENS----Georgia continues a season-long eight-game home stand at Foley Field Tuesday when it plays host to Charleston Southern. First pitch will be at 6:02 p.m. The game will be televised on SEC Network+ and be available on the Bulldog Sports Network from IMG.

After two weekends of league play, Georgia (18-6, 5-1 SEC) and Vanderbilt (17-7, 5-1 SEC) are co-leaders in the SEC with a 5-1 league mark. Dating back to last season, the Bulldogs have won five straight SEC series with the most recent one a sweep of South Carolina. It marked Georgia’s fifth straight series win over the Gamecocks and first sweep of them since 2008. Also, it was Georgia’s first SEC sweep since 2015 (at Tennessee) and first SEC home sweep since 2012 (Auburn). At 5-1 in the SEC, this is Georgia’s best start since 2002 when it began 5-1. Currently, Arkansas (17-7, 4-2 SEC) and Ole Miss (22-3, 4-2 SEC) share the lead in the Western Division.

After facing Charleston Southern (8-17), Georgia welcomes 15th-ranked Texas A&M (19-6, 2-4 SEC) to Foley Field starting Thursday. The Bucs upset Georgia 5-4 in Charleston earlier this season when the Bulldogs allowed four unearned runs in the ninth. Since then, Georgia is 11-1 and the lone loss came in 13 innings at Alabama 10-9. In records dating back to 1950, Georgia leads the series with CSU 9-1. The Bucs lone win came in the last meeting earlier this season, a 5-4 upset on March 5. Since then, CSU has gone 2-10 while the Bulldogs have gone 11-1.

Sophomore Tony Locey (4-0, 4.12 ERA) will start as part of a staff night for Georgia Tuesday. Neither of the projected starters for Tuesday’s game pitched in the first meeting this year. CSU has visited Athens five previous seasons, the most recent came in 2016 when the Bulldogs won a pair of games.

The Bulldogs entered two of the four national top 25 polls this week, checking in at No. 23 in Collegiate Baseball's Top 30 and No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Georgia is not in the top 25 polls of Baseball America or D1Baseball. The Bulldogs are averaging 7.8 runs a game while batting .294 with a 3.69 ERA and a .975 FLDG%.

Offensively, Georgia has been led by senior outfielder Keegan McGovern (.379-10-29), sophomore third baseman/pitcher Aaron Schunk (.319-0-15; 1-0, 0.77 ERA, 2 SV, 11.2 IP, 16K), junior designated hitter Michael Curry (.352-4-26) and junior first baseman Adam Sasser (.351-2-19). Curry has a 10-game hitting streak while Sasser’s is at nine games. McGovern ranks among the top 10 in the SEC in numerous offensive categories including second in home runs. Schunk had a career-best 16 game-hitting streak end during the USC series but did register his first two career saves. Sophomore Cam Shepherd is batting just .250 but has 23 RBI and 21 walks. Redshirt freshman catcher Mason Meadows (.327-2-14) started all three games of the USC series and hit .368-1-5. Junior second baseman LJ Talley is hitting a team-best .381-1-5 in SEC action. Pitcher Ryan Webb (1-1, 2.88 ERA) earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors the league announced Monday as he was part of a combined four-hit shutout of USC to cap a series sweep.
