ATHENS — Georgia freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis said from the onset his goal was to learn as much as possible from Jake Fromm.
From the sounds of it, that’s exactly what’s happening in the Bulldogs’ spring camp.
Fromm raved about the progress the 6-foot-6, 210-pound Mathis is making after enrolling at the University of Georgia in January.
“D’Wan, he’s explosive,” Fromm said. “I think he converted three or four first downs in a row with his legs.
“The guy can run the ball, he can throw it 70 yards, he’s going to be a great player.”

Georgia has Mathis along with junior college transfer Stetson Bennett in reserve behind Fromm.
While Bennett has the advantage of knowing the offense, having spent a year in the program before his year of junior college, Mathis’ athleticism is supreme.
Fromm is working with Mathis to help him learn the offense better.
“I think just trying to work with him by getting to the books, knowing exactly what’s going on and how to make checks, how to communicate with guys,” Fromm said. “He’s doing really well. He’s making huge strides and really proud of what we’re seeing from him.”
Fromm said it stands to reason there will be a learning curve for Mathis, who was committed to Ohio Sate before the Buckeyes began talking to Justin Fields about transferring to Columbus.
“It’s trying to get (Mathis) to learn how to learn, know what’s going on, understand progressions, drops, it’s a lot more sophisticated offense than he ran in high school,” Fromm said. “But he’s doing a great job. He can run, he can throw, just trying to get him to put it all together, and he’s doing a really good job right now.”
Kirby Smart was also impressed with Mathis in last Saturday’s scrimmage.
“I thought D’Wan did some good things with his feet, he was able to break contain and get out and move around,” Smart said. “He got better today. He has some improving to do, but he got better today.”
