Election 2022: Everything you need to know

Polls opened across Georgia at 7 a.m. Tuesday for the 2022 midterms, with some experts forecasting this election could be the most consequential in years.

Every seat in the House of Representatives is up for grabs, CBS News reports, as are 35 U.S. Senate seats and 36 governorships.

“Several more down-ballot races for secretary of state, attorney general or control of state legislatures could have wide-ranging effects on the management of the 2024 presidential elections,” CBS News correspondents Ed O’Keefe, Aaron Navarro, and Rebecca Kaplan report.

The results of Election 2022 could also impact controversial issues like abortion rights, climate change and health care.

The Associated Press reports that Republicans are predicting a “massive red wave as anxious Democrats defend their narrow majorities in Congress while struggling to overcome pervasive concerns about the economy, crime and President Joe Biden’s leadership.”

The AP’s Steve Peoples explains that the political environment has led to an “unusually large playing field as emboldened Republicans press into Democratic strongholds like New York, California, New Mexico and Washington state.”

Peoples adds, “Still, the marquee races are taking place in swing states like Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, all of which could help determine the outcome of the 2024 presidential contest.”

In anticipation of close contests and extended vote counting, experts say it could take days or weeks before the final outcome is known in several key races. Read more about what The AP is watching on Election Day.
