ATHENS, GA — The man convicted of raping and killing University of Georgia law student Tara Baker 25 years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.
50-year-old Edrick Faust was linked to the crime in 2024 after extensive DNA testing. Earlier this week, a jury found him guilty on all counts.
The order of the court was two consecutive life sentences, plus 45 years in confinement.
The sentencing was briefly put on pause this afternoon to research the maximum sentence for the rape count, as the maximum sentence in 2001 when the crime occurred is different than the maximum sentence now.
The sentencing marked the conclusion of a case that spanned more than two decades, with investigators finally securing the DNA evidence that tied him to the crime.
Victim statements were heard in court on Thursday afternoon, including a written statement read by Baker’s mother, who appeared distraught in court.
