Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Gwinnett County neighborhood

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in a Lawrenceville neighborhood.

Gwinnett County Police Corporal Ryan Winderweedle said officers were called to a home on Oaktree Park Court after a domestic dispute that led to a reported stabbing.

“911 dispatchers received a call of a stabbing from a domestic violence situation,” Winderweedle said.

Winderweedle said when officers arrived, the man came out of the home holding a knife above his head.

“The individual came out immediately with a knife above his head and charged at the officers in an offensive manner,” Winderweedle said.

Officers gave commands for him to drop the knife and attempted to de-escalate the situation.

Police identified the man as 31-year-old Nawras Mahmud. Winderweedle said Mahmud refused to drop the weapon and continued to come toward officers holding the knife above his head. Officers then shot him in the front yard.

Mahmud was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
