Deputy’s gun goes off outside school in Madison

Happened outside Morgan Co Elementary School

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office says there were no injuries when a School Resource Officer’s handgun discharged in his patrol car. It happened Monday at Morgan County Elementary School. The Sheriff’s Office in Madison says the deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

This (Monday) morning at the Morgan County Elementary School, as the School Resource Deputy was preparing for work, he was manipulating his back-up service weapon when he experienced an unintentional discharge inside his patrol vehicle. The projectile went downward through the seat lodging in the floorboard. No one was injured.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and the Morgan County Charter School System are working collaboratively together to determine the facts and ensure that proper steps are taken to protect the safety of the students, teachers, staff, and parents.

The deputy was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
