BARROW COUNTY, GA — Apalachee High School’s interim head football coach has resigned amid an investigation into allegations that he used racially derogatory language.
The Barrow County School District confirmed Charles Kenyon’s resignation and announced that Alex Savakinas will serve as the school’s acting head football coach.
The district says any inappropriate or unprofessional statement or behavior, even if intended or presented as a joke, will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
“Our school and school system believe and expect that all students, staff, and guests should be treated with dignity and respect. Any inappropriate or unprofessional statement or behavior, even if intended or represented as a ‘joke,’ will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated,” principal Jessica Rehberg said in a letter to the community.
Savakinas becomes Apalachee High School’s fourth head football coach since the September 2024 shooting at the school.
Former head football coach Mike Hancock resigned months after the shooting to focus on his mental health.
