Area briefs: Commerce gets new City Manager, Maysville Mayor is focus of assault probe

Commerce has its next City Manager: Matthew Hailey, one of two finalists for the job, will assume the post as the other finalist—Jennifer Scott—has pulled out of the running. Scott is the Town Manager in Braselton.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the report of a man from Maysville, who claims he was assaulted by Maysville Mayor Richard Presley after a City Council meeting held earlier this week.

A 29 year-old Winder man becomes the 17th person arrested in a Hall County child sex investigation. The Sheriff’s Office in Gainesville says Brandon McDaniel-Waddell surrendered to deputies at the Hall County jail.

A driver from Clarkesville is arrested after hitting a pedestrian in a parking lot in Cornelia. The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office says 22 year-old Howell Mendenhall was behind the wheel of the car that struck and injured a 36 year-old man from Hall County. The person who was hit suffered what were described as serious injuries and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

An 80-year-old man is facing a child molestation charge after parents found a concerning note in their daughter’s book bag. Deputies later arrested William Allen (pictured) and charged him with child molestation. He was booked into the Habersham County Jail.
