Athens man dies from injuries in August accident

Two-vehicle crash at Timothy and Epps Bridge

Athens-Clarke County Police say Thomas Stephens has died: the 67 year-old Athens man was injured in a crash that happened August 28 at Timothy and Epps Bridge Roads. The driver of a second vehicle in the two-car collision has been charged with DUI. Sean Brown is 21 years old, from Monroe.

On September 10, 2021, the ACCPD was advised by the Clarke County Coroner that Robert Thomas Stephens (67 YOA, Athens, GA) died after succumbing to injuries sustained in an August 28th Serious Injury Crash. This marks the 17th fatal crash of 2021 in Athens-Clarke County.

Stephens suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Brown suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Further investigation led to citations being issued to Brown for DUI-Alcohol and Serious Injury by Vehicle.

According to the ACCPD investigation of the August 28th crash, Stephens was driving a 2005 Buick LeSabre and began to turn left onto Timothy Road from Epps Bridge Road. As the Buick was turning, it was struck by a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Sean Steven Brown (21 YOA, Monroe, GA). The resulting collision injured both drivers.
