Talk about proposed sidewalk extensions for Athens’ east side are up for discussion in a forum scheduled for later this week at Athens-Clarke County Police Department headquarters on Lexington Road.
From the Athens-Clarke Co government website...
Residents and business owners are invited to provide input through Sunday, June 26, 2022 on proposed sidewalk extensions along Lexington Highway as part of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax 2018 Project #14 - Lexington Highway Corridor Improvements.
A drop-in open house will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2022 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Athens-Clarke County Police Department Training Room located at 3035 Lexington Road. The open house will provide residents with an opportunity to view and comment on the proposed sidewalk segments on Lexington Highway, which span from Johnson Drive to Gaines School Road, as well as between existing sidewalks in front of the ACCGov Diversion Center facility and Police Department.
In addition to the open house, an online survey is available at www.accgov.com/lexingtonhighway through Sunday, June 26, 2022. The survey includes information about the project process and maps of the proposed segments.
In total, this sub-project will add approximately 1.5 miles of new sidewalk on Lexington Highway when completed. Some segments of the sidewalk extensions will be built by private developers during separate construction projects underway in the project area. Other sidewalk extensions on Lexington Highway between Johnson Drive and Loop 10 are scheduled for completion as part of the ongoing Georgia Department of Transportation Interchange Improvement Project.
The Lexington Highway Corridor Improvements Project seeks to improve traffic flow, pedestrian access, and bicycle facilities along the Lexington Highway corridor. The project webpage at www.accgov.com/lexingtonhighway includes details on sub-projects, past corridor studies, reference material, maps, and public input survey links. Residents can also sign up for email and text notifications for each corridor in order to receive information about key future dates and opportunities for additional input.
The Mayor and Commission approved a potential project list at their July 7, 2020 Regular Session after an initial round of public input. A list of prioritized project concepts were later approved on September 7, 2021.
