Clarke Co BOE meets as market controversy simmers

The Clarke County School Board meets this evening: it’s a 6 o’clock session at the HT Edwards Building on Dearing Extension.

Clarke County School Superintendent Demond Means has laid out a plan that calls for the elimination of the West Broad Street Market. It’s a plan for the future of the historic West Broad Street School, and it’s a plan that is already generating controversy and pushback from those who want to see the market and the garden continue.

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Assessors meets this afternoon: 5 o’clock at the City Hall.

The City Council in Winder has rejected a proposal for a rezoning of 70 acres at the intersection of Highways 53 and 11. A developer wanted to build more than 200 new homes at that crossing in Barrow County. The Council vote against the rezoning plan was unanimous.
