Early voting ends

Today is the last day of early voting in Athens and around the state: there are three local voting venues—the Elections Office on Washington Street, City Hall next door, and the Library on Baxter Street. Voters are casting ballots in advance of next Tuesday’s runoff elections. There are two statewide contests: Athens Democrat John Barrow vs Johns Creek Republican Brad Raffensperger for Secretary of State, and incumbent Republican Chuck Eaton against Democrat Lindy Miller for a seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission.

This is the last weekend on the campaign trail for state Representative Dan Gasaway and his Republican rival, Chris Erwin (pictured above). An election do-over was ordered in their northeast Georgia House race when some voters in Habersham County cast ballots in the wrong district when the primary was held back in May. Incumbent Gasaway is a Republican from Homer; Erwin is a former superintendent of schools in Banks County. The revote takes place next Tuesday. A week of early voting in their special election wraps up today.
