A public memorial service for Athens tree surgeon John Conaway is set for 6:30 this evening at the Graduate on Dougherty Street in downtown Athens. Conaway fell 80 feet to his death while working on a tree on Holman Avenue on October 4.

"Treeman" John Curtis Conaway left for his long walk in the forest on Wednesday, October 4 from Athens, GA.
He loved his children above all else but also had a passion for music (especially jazz), art, literature, nature, animals, coffee, and the Athens community. In his 56 short but full years, he had a successful tree service, reached number one in the U.S. for track in high school and college, was a talented actor who starred in plays, movies, and TV, and traveled through Europe as a performance artist.
He is survived by his five incredible children, Nadzieja Cole-Conaway, Joshua Conaway, Esther Cole-Conaway, Mo Conaway, and Joseph Conaway, as well as his mother JoAn Witt and his sister, Cristi Conaway Murphy. John Curtis was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
In lieu of a funeral, the family will be hosting a celebration of life, which will be open to everyone who wishes to come remember and honor him on Monday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m.-until in the ballroom of The Graduate Athens Hotel at 295 E. Dougherty St., Athens, GA 30601.
