Local briefs: challenger for Mayor Girtz, more Rivian controversy

Bowersville boil water advisory is lifted

Pearl Hall says she is running for Mayor of Athens: the former Clarke County School District staffer becomes the first announced challenger to incumbent Kelly Girtz, who announced last month his plans to seek a second term in the mayor’s office in Athens.

Another meeting of the Joint Development of Athens-Clarke County and the City of Winterville is set for 5:30 this afternoon.

The University of Georgia’s Staff Council meets today: UGA says the virtual session gets underway at 2:30 this afternoon.

A boil water advisory in Hart County is lifted: the water in Bowersville is now considered safe to drink. The advisory was put in place after a water main break last Thursday.

There is a call for yet another delay in a public hearing on plans for the Rivian plant, a massive auto manufacturing site that would be built in Morgan and Walton counties. The hearing is scheduled for tomorrow night, in another session of the Joint Development Authority that serves Morgan, Walton, Newton, and Jasper counties. Critics of the planned plant and its 75 hundred jobs say they are concerned about noise, traffic, and congestion.
