Local briefs include bridge fix on Fowler Mill Road, called meeting of Clarke Co BOE

Athens-Clarke County Transportation and Public Works says a temporary bridge is open to traffic on Fowler Mill Road. Construction of a permanent replacement for the bridge on Athens’ west side is expected to take up to three years to complete. The original bridge, which opened in 1931, has been closed after failing an inspection.

There is a special called meeting of the Clarke County School Board: Board members will go behind closed doors for an executive session that is set for 6 o’clock at School District offices on Prince Avenue in Athens.

The committee that is working on site selection for a new Athens-Clarke County judicial center meets this afternoon, a 4 o’clock session in Athens.

There will be no need for a special election in Walton County, where Angenette Brooks was the only candidate to qualify to replace Simoan Baker as the County’s District 1 School Board member.  Baker left office after she was arrested on felony theft charges, allegations that were leveled last year in Monroe.

There is a retirement in Jefferson, where Joe Holt is stepping down as Chairman of the Jackson County Board of Adjustment. Holt is leaving after 25 years on the Board.

Gainesville Police make an arrest in this week’s robbery of a bank in Gainesville: 36 year-old Davis Ross is accused in Tuesday morning’s gunpoint robbery of a Regions Bank in Gainesville. He was arrested by police at a motel in Gainesville.
