Local briefs include deadline day at UGA

Today is a deadline day at UGA: this is the last day for University of Georgia students to withdraw from the fall classes that began in August.

It will be December at the earliest before Oconee County Commissioners vote on a rezone request from developers who want to build a Publix grocery store development on Mars Hill Road. The Oconee County Planning Commission has pushed action on the rezone request into next month. Commissioners rejected a similar proposal last year.

This evening’s meeting of the Madison County Commission is set for 6 o’clock at the County Government Complex in Danielsville.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly vehicle vs pedestrian accident in Walton County: a man was killed when he was hit by a truck while walking across Highway 81. Victim Daniel Sweat was from Newton County.

Crews spent the weekend working to reopen two roads in Hall County, roads closed when six cars on a freight train jumped the tracks in Gainesville. There were no injuries reported.
