Man killed in hit-and-run wreck in Barrow Co

Police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a 66-year-old man and his dog while they were out for a walk.

A neighbor told Channel 2 Action News she looked out the window and saw the accident on Jefferson Road in Statham.

"I was so shocked seeing him laying there because he walks that dog every day," Jean Stephens told Channel 2's Tom Jones.

Deputies say a gray or silver Infiniti, either a G-35 or G-36, lost control, left the road and hit Barnes and his dog.

According to deputies, the car swerved out of control into the wrong lane when it struck Marvin Barnes. Barnes was about six feet off the roadway.

Barnes was almost home from walking his dog. He lives right up the long driveway. When Jones went to his home to speak to his wife, family members said she is understandably too distraught to speak with us.

Family members said Barnes loved his family and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

Latoya Brown, one of Barnes' relatives, is in a state of shock.

"(They) didn't even have the courtesy to stop to see if he was breathing. (They) kept going," she said.

Now, they're asking the person who took his life to do them a favor.

"All I want them to do just turn themself in. Turn themself in," Brown said.
