Oconee County Primary and Oconee County Elementary were selected on Wednesday as National Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Schools of Excellence.
“We are proud of Oconee County Primary and Oconee County Elementary for being recognized as National Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Schools of Excellence,” Superintendent Jason L. Branch said. “This honor reflects the steadfast dedication of our students and educators, and the unparalleled support of our community. The unique double distinction showcases the high standards that each school consistently maintains. We salute this success and commend the collective efforts that have led to this honor.”
There have been 289 schools nationwide recognized as National Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Schools of Excellence since 2003, with eight being in Oconee County: Dove Creek, High Shoals, Malcom Bridge, Oconee County, and Rocky Branch elementary schools; Oconee County Primary; Malcom Bridge Middle; and North Oconee High. High Shoals and Malcom Bridge elementaries are two-time awardees.
Oconee County Primary and Oconee County Elementary received the recognition after successfully completing a rigorous process by the national Blue Ribbon Schools for Excellence organization. The schools excelled in all nine categories of the Blueprint for Excellence:
• Student Focus and Support
• School Organization and Culture
• Challenging Standards and Curriculum
• Active Teaching and Learning
• Technology Integration
• Professional Community
• Leadership and Educational Vitality
• School, Community, and Family Partnerships
• Indicators of Success
The process to become a Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School includes a written application, parent and staff surveys, and an on-site validation and review.
“It is such an honor for us to receive this recognition,” OCPS Principal Shelby Hilley said. “We are so proud of the work being done inside our school on a daily basis. We know all of the great work that is happening, and now we’ve been told that others see what we see and know what we know. I am so grateful to the students, teachers, and parents who were candid and honest with their feedback throughout this process. We are all floating on air.”
“This recognition is a true point of pride for our school,” OCES Principal Jennifer Laughridge said. “This is a reflection of the outstanding practices and collaborations of our students, staff, and families. They are being recognized for their hard work and their consistent commitment to excellence. Our school is proud to offer an environment that fosters academic excellence and a lifelong love of learning. This is a thrilling moment for all of us.”
Designation as a Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School lasts for five years, at which time the school will be eligible for revalidation. Blue Ribbon Lighthouse Schools commit to sharing expertise and exemplary practices with other schools on a local, regional, and national level as well as providing mentoring and networking to schools seeking guidance and assistance in school improvement initiatives.
