Truist Park hosts special blood drive in memory of former UGA student

ATLANTA — A two-day blood drive at Truist Park is honoring the memory of a former University of Georgia student who died in 2023 after battling cancer.

The American Red Cross is partnering with the Atlanta Braves and Delta Air Lines for the third annual Morgan Delaney Blood Drive on Monday, Nov. 2, and Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Delaney was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer in 2022. During her treatment, she depended on blood and platelet transfusions while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

Allison Flexner with the American Red Cross says Delaney’s parents wanted to honor their daughter’s memory while helping others facing similar challenges.

“Her parents do want to keep her memory alive, honor her selfless spirit, and make sure people are aware of the importance of blood donations in the treatment of cancer,” Flexner said.

The event also comes as the Red Cross prepares for a seasonal decline in donations.

“What we start to see as we come into the holidays is a bit of a slow down in donations, people get busy, they’re traveling, and there’s seasonal illness,” Flexner said.

Organizers hope the event will encourage more people to donate blood and platelets to help patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The blood drive will take place at Truist Park from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
