Today is the first day of the new fall semester at the University of Georgia. A first day of class celebration is set for 11 til 2 on the north lawn of UGA’s Tate Student Center.
The new fall semester at the University of Georgia, underway today, is highlighted by the opening of the University’s newest residence hall: the first students have moved into Black-Diallo-Miller Hall, named in honor of the first black students to enroll as freshmen and graduate from UGA.
There is a reminder from the University of Georgia on this first day of fall semester classes: the road beneath the railroad trestle on East Campus Road and Baldwin Street is closed to cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians, with work on the road scheduled to start in mid-September and be completed by the end of the year.

Due to the closure beneath the railroad trestle near East Campus Road/Baldwin Street, we will have active traffic controllers stationed at the intersection of Mitchell Street and South Thomas Street, Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Please be cautious and mindful of other vehicles and pedestrians as you travel through this area.
As a reminder, while the road beneath the trestle is closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists are still able to safely cross this area via the designated covered paths.
We are on track to begin work by mid-September and hope to reopen this area by the end of December. We will continue updating the University community on any new developments regarding this project.
