Commission redistricting maps head to legislature

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners, meeting virtually for a special called session Thursday, voted to approve a resolution endorsing a new Commission district map drawn by the only Democrat in the Athens legislative delegation. Commissioners Mike Hamby and Allison Wright voted against the lines that were drawn by state Rep Spencer Frye, making it likely the legislature will approve the map drawn by local Republicans. That’s the district configuration that moves Commissioners Melissa Link, Tim Denson, and Russell Edwards into new districts and makes it unlikely that they will be able to run for reelection in May.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners meet in retreat today, a planning session that starts at 9 and lasts til 1 at the Sniper Water Resources Building on Barber Street in Athens.

City officials in Commerce have filed an appeal, challenging the Jackson County Elections Board’s December decision to move Jackson County’s early voting site from the Parks and Rec building in Commerce to the Benton Center in Nicholson.
