Winter storm prep begins

The Georgia Department of Transportation says that it has started applying brine on many primary routes in North Georgia. District one GDOT crews began pre-treating bridges and overpasses Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. ahead of winter storm Inga. The District’s most northern counties were the first to be treated. Crews distributed 3500 gallons of salt water in those counties.

At 12 p.m. on Tuesday, brine application began in Gwinnett, Hall, Dawson and Forsyth. I-985, SR-316, I-85 and SR-400 were treated with nearly 70,000 gallons of brine.

"We expect to experience the leading edge of the wintry mix/snow in our far northwestern counties as the system then moves southeasterly through our District. Our forces started pre-treating bridges and overpasses ahead of it on a 12 hour shift schedule," District Maintenance Engineer Rob Mabry said.

GDOT says maintenance crews will begin shifts on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
