Alaska earthquake: Magnitude 8.2 quake reported off coast, sparks tsunami warning

PERRYVILLE, Alaska — A magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck off the Alaska coast late Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey is reporting.

No information about possible damage or injuries was immediately available.

According to the agency, the quake, which occurred about 10:15 p.m. Alaska time Wednesday, was centered about 57 miles east-southeast of Perryville at a depth of 29 miles. Two other earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.5 occurred in the same area within the next half-hour, the agency reported.

Following the initial quake, authorities issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii and a tsunami warning for parts of the Alaska coast. Those were later lifted.
