Diamond Dogs outlast No. 4 Clemson, win 15 inning marathon

The 17th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (30-10) defeated fourth-ranked Clemson 4-3 in a 15-inning thriller Tuesday that lasted five hours and 30 minutes in front of a season-high crowd of 4,183 at Foley Field.

· Chandler Marsh made his first appearance since March 12 against Iowa, coming in the 14th inning. Marsh struck out all five batters he faced over 1.2 innings to earn his first win of the season.

· Georgia employed 10 pitchers in the win, combining for a total of 21 strikeouts, and the last nine hurlers tossed 11 scoreless innings.

· Paul Toetz scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Rocco Reid in the 15th.

· Tuesday’s game saw a season-high attendance at Foley Field, at 4,183, the most since a record 4,461 saw Georgia beat No. 25 Miss. State in 2009. It was the second largest crowd since the 1990 renovation.

· Zach Harris made his first career start as a Bulldog, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one walk, and striking out two.

· Charlie Condon was intentionally walked twice, in the fifth and in the ninth, giving him 17 on the year. The Bulldogs have drawn 20 intentional walks as a team.

· Corey Collins (2-3, 2 RBI) singled in the ninth inning to score pinch runner Trey King and to tie the game at three.

· Tonight’s game was the longest by innings and time since Georgia beat Clemson 3-2 in 20 innings here in 2019 in a game that lasted six hours and 33 minutes, both school records.

“This was by far the longest game I’ve been a part of. It’s really hard to stay locked in for both teams. The beginning and middle of the game was really good, but then you see a lot of zeros from the 10th to the 15th, but we did our best to stay locked in and focused. We got rewarded today, and that’s the best thing about it. Right before (the wild pitch), Coach Simpson looked at me and said remember the ball kicks hard off the backstop, so I was locked in. In the back of my head I was like, he will probably throw it to the backstop. I didn’t even hesitate, I said let’s go home. I was running really fast and that’s how it felt with everyone yelling.”

On what the adrenaline was like for him coming into a game in those circumstances…

“It was awesome. I spent a lot of time in the bullpen, until around the 13th. It was just guy after guy, doing their job. Fortunately, I got my name called, and I’m really excited it came now. There’s no better group of guys to do it with. They’re the best, and there’s no one else I’d rather compete with.”

“That’s what I try to tell them, to know that you can play with anybody in the country. We’ve done it. We won at Tennessee, we went into one of the hardest place to play, in my opinion, at Mississippi State and won a game. You look at some of the things that we’ve done and we have to continue to believe, get better, and learn from tonight.
