Hartwell Speedway had planned to reopen this weekend, but now the operators of the track in Hart County say it will remain closed while new safety upgrades are installed. A spectator was killed on July 3 when a car slammed into a wall and sent debris flying; two other people were seriously injured. The man who was killed was Paul Ballenger. He was 57 years old, from Royston.

First and foremost we would like to thank all those who have sent text, calls, and messages of well wishes. It means a great deal to us that you are such a supportive racing community not only to the families affected, but also to Hartwell Speedway.
We had previously announced that Hartwell Speedway would be reopening this Saturday July 17th, however, that is not possible at this time. We are currently in the process of making some updates around the speedway which is taking more time than expected because of a shortage on materials.
We are committed to being as transparent as possible WE ARE REOPENING. We will give updates as they are available. Our first race back will dedicated to all three families affected and we will be raising money for the three families. (More information to come)
Thank you again for your support,
Hartwell Speedway Family
