Athens, Ga. (Scott Kinney)

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Tax Assessors says it will be open next Monday, a day on which many local government offices will be closed in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. The office is handling appeals from Athens homeowners who are challenging the dramatic spikes in their assessed values.

From the Athens-Clarke Co government website…

The Athens-Clarke County Tax Assessor’s Office will be open to the public on Monday, June 20, 2022 – the observed local Juneteenth holiday – to file appeals. Appeals can also be filed on Tuesday, June 21.

On Tuesday, June 7, 2022, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission approved an ordinance that established Juneteenth (June 19) as a holiday for Athens-Clarke County employees. Since June 19 falls on a Sunday, the holiday will be observed on Monday, June 20. Departments and offices have the flexibility for June 2022 to adjust their operations and employees’ schedules throughout the pay period according to operational needs.

In addition, since the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government’s ordinance establishes the date as a local government holiday, the Tax Assessor’s Office will allow for appeals to be filed on the following day of Tuesday, June 21, 2022 in either of the following two ways:

  • (1) Appeals can be filed in person with the Tax Assessor’s Office by the close of the business day (5:00 PM) on June 21, 2022, or
  • (2) Appeals can be mailed to the Tax Assessor’s Office, but must be postmarked by the US Postal Service no later than June 21, 2022.
