A stretch of Baldwin Street is closed after a crane truck struck a steel beam beneath a trestle: it’s near a University of Georgia worksite near East Campus Road, but UGA says the accident was unrelated to its construction project.
From UGA…
The University has recently been engaged in design and engineering efforts to conduct necessary repairs to the parking lot and railroad trestle parallel to East Campus Road. During this time, a crane truck from an unrelated project traveling east on Baldwin Street struck a steel beam beneath the trestle. The damage warranted closure of Baldwin Street (an Athens-Clarke County roadway) beneath the trestle until further investigation can be completed and a plan of action developed.
A third-party engineer evaluated the damage and recommended, out of an abundance of caution and to minimize the risk of vehicles being struck by falling debris, the roadway beneath the trestle remain closed to all traffic at this time. Safe passage with overhead protection will be installed to provide access to pedestrians and cyclists and will be in place as soon as possible.
