ACCPD releases 2023 crime data

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is out with 2023 crime data, saying the overall rate of crime dropped two percent. Police say crimes against persons held steady from the previous year, while property crimes were down. DUI and other liquor law violations were up from 2022.

The Athens-Clarke County Police announced today that the 2023 overall crime rate for Athens[1]Clarke County is down two percent compared to 2022 data. The three major categories that define crime rate are Crimes Against Persons, down 6.8%; Crimes Against Property, down 2.6%; and Crimes Against Society, up 5.4%.

“The dedication and high productivity of our employees, from the Records Unit and the Detective Bureau to the Patrol Officers and Crime Prevention Officers, continues to raise the profile and reach of our department,” stated ACCPD Chief Jerry Saulters. “I’m proud of their work and the difference they are making in the Athens-Clarke County community.”

In Crimes Against Persons, there were no significant increases in any category, but Simple Assaults is down 2.5%, and Assault by Intimidation is down significantly by 11.5%. In Crimes Against Property, significant decreases occurred in Burglaries, down 31.1%, and Entering Autos, down 12.6%. These decreases showcase the efforts of ACCPD’s proactive approach to preventing crime before it occurs using predictive modeling and distributing resources where they are most needed.

In Crimes Against Society, Driving Under the Influence is up 10.8%, Drunkenness is up 112%, and Liquor Laws Violations is up 200%.

“The ACCPD is committed to creating safer roadways,” stated Saulters, “and we are answering community concerns with drunkenness citations/arrests, which can lead to other crimes.” In other categories, Aggravated Assaults have decreased by approximately 10% since 2021, Burglaries have decreased by approximately 57% since 2019, and Motor Vehicle Theft has decreased by approximately 39% since 2021.
