ATLANTA — If you get your health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, you could pay more for coverage next year.
Insurance providers on Georgia Access are proposing premium increases ahead of open enrollment for 2027. Georgians for a Healthy Future Policy Director Whitney Griggs says the proposed increases average about 21%.
“We’re seeing on average a 21% increase in these proposed premiums,” Griggs said.
The proposed increases vary by provider, ranging from about 12% to nearly 54%.
“It’s hard to know exactly, but things that we’ve heard insurers say include, having to insure an older and sicker risk pool,” Griggs said.
The proposed increases come after hundreds of thousands of Georgians dropped their coverage amid rising costs and the end of ACA subsidies.
“We’ve seen a drop of over half a million Georgians in Georgia access between the spring of 2025 and the spring of 2026,” Griggs said.
Griggs says she is concerned higher premiums could lead to more people dropping their coverage.
“I think unfortunately we will continue to see people drop coverage on Georgia Access because of these premium increases,” Griggs said.
How much consumers ultimately pay could also depend on how federal and state subsidies are calculated.
The proposed rates could change. Final premium increases will be released ahead of open enrollment in November.
