Area briefs: Athens Elections Board meets, Hoschton Council talks bypass

With the May 21 elections now six weeks away, there is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections, 4:30 at the Government Building on Dougherty Street.

Kevin “Catfish” Jackson will be laid to rest following an afternoon funeral at Christ Church in Savannah. Jackson, who went on to become a businessman in Savannah, was a member of the Georgia Bulldogs 1980 national championship team. He died last week at the age of 62.

Athens journalist Chris Dowd confirms receipt of a cease and desist order from an Athens-Clarke County Commission candidate: the lawyer for District 6 Commission hopeful Stephanie Johnson has also threated a temporary restraining order after Johnson received what she says was harassing contact from Dowd and his website Athens Politics Nerd. Johnson faces Rashe Malcom in the race to replace Jesse Houle, who is not running for reelection. Early voting for the May 21 election begins on April 29.

The University of Georgia’s annual CURO Symposium continues today in Athens: UGA’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Symposium that began Monday wraps up later today at the Classic Center.

Jackson County’s Habitat for Humanity is putting the finishing touches on two Habitat homes that will be dedicated in ceremonies set for Saturday in Commerce.

The City Council in Hoschton is revisiting the long-discussed proposal for a bypass that would take traffic off Highway 53 on the south end of Hoschton.

Rhonda Wood takes her oath of office in Oakwood: Wood has been sworn in as the newest member of the Oakwood City Council. The inauguration comes as the Secretary of State’s office investigates her win in last month’s election. Hall County elections officials confirm that 200 people who didn’t live in Oakwood were able to cast ballots in the special election, which Wood won by just 88 votes.
