Area briefs: Athens man charged in Elberton shooting, school bus crashes near Oakwood

An Athens man is one of two people arrested after a shooting in Elbert County. There are aggravated assault charges for 25 year-old Phillip Turman and for 24 year-old Keyshawn Woodson of Elberton. Police say they fired gunshots into a vehicle in Elberton. There were no injuries. Turman and Woodson were arrested in Anderson South Carolina.

Polling conducted by the University of Georgia and its School of Public and International Affairs shows President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump running neck-and-neck in Georgia in a hypothetical 2024 rematch of the election Biden won in 2020: Republican Trump has 45 percent, while Democrat Biden has 44 in the UGA polling that is done for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Madison County city of Hull will spend federal dollars on fire department upgrades: the City Council in Hull has approved the use of almost $30 thousand in American Rescue Plan funding to purchase new firefighting equipment, equipment that will include masks and boots for firefighters.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Elbert County Commission, a 5 o’clock session at the County Government Complex in Elberton.

Three people were taken to hospitals after a Wednesday school bus accident in Hall County. It happened near Oakwood, where the Georgia State Patrol says a car hit a bus with four students on board. Two of the students were checked over at a nearby hospital, as was the driver of the car. The State Patrol says the driver—a 34 year-old man from Cobb County—will be charged with failure to yield.
