Area briefs: Commerce battery plant faces fine, Bowman killer gets life sentence

The spring semester final exams that began Wednesday continue today at UGA, in advance of next week’s spring commencement exercises, set for next Friday at the University of Georgia.

The SK battery plant in Commerce is facing a fine: the federal Environmental Protection Division says the sprawling facility in Jackson County mishandled discarded battery shells and will have to pay a fine of $33 thousand.

There is a guilty plea from Andrew Berry: the Bowman man gets life in prison for the 2023 murder of his girlfriend. 21 year-old Destiny Huff was stabbed to death in Elbert County on New Year’s Day of last year.

Property assessment notices are hitting mailboxes in Winder. The Barrow County Tax Assessor’s Office says the notices went out this week.
