Area briefs: Commissioners quiz candidates, deputies arrest robbery suspect

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners are busy today, interviewing candidates to fill seats on various boards, authorities, and commissions. The interview sessions will start at 5 o’clock this afternoon at Athens City Hall.

The committee that is looking at plans for the redevelopment of the Georgia Square Mall property on Atlanta Highway meets this afternoon: it’s a 3:30 session at the Extension Service offices on Cleveland Road in Bogart.

There is music this evening in Athens: the University of Georgia’s Wind Ensemble is in concert, 7:30 tonight in UGA’s Hodgson Hall.

A man from Commerce is arrested and booked into the Banks County jail: 57 year-old Ray Collins is charged in the 2019 robbery of a convenience store near Baldwin.

There are methamphetamine trafficking charges for a man arrested in Hall County: 49 year-old Jason Alexander was caught with what Hall County drug agents say was more than $27 thousand worth of meth. He was booked into the Hall County jail in Gainesville.

Brian Sloan is returning to the Hall County School Board: Sloan has been chosen to fill the unexpired term of Mark Pettit, who resigned earlier this year to make a run for the Hall County Clerk of Courts Office. Sloan previously served on the Hall County Board of Education, three terms from 2007 through 2018.

Hall County is putting the finishing touches on construction of its newest fire station: a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new station in Buford is scheduled for next month.
