Area briefs: Congressman talks about government shutdown, DOT updates bridge work

Republican Andrew Clyde, the Athens gun shop owner who represents much of northeast Georgia in the US House, says he’s a no vote on the latest version of an appropriations measure designed to head off a government shutdown that could happen as early as this weekend.

The Fall Book Sale that began Wednesday continues today at the Library on Baxter Street: the annual sale is organized by Friends of the Athens-Clarke County Library.

The Georgia DOT sets the date for the opening of new bridges on the Highway 10 Loop in Athens: the DOT says work on the bridges near Old Hull Road will continue after a single lane of traffic opens on October 5, one week from today. Work on the bridge project is expected to be fully completed by next spring.

Madison County Commissioners have greenlighted funding for a firefighters training facility: Commissioners, meeting this week in Danielsville, signed off on $1.1 million for the project, with the bulk of the money coming from American Rescue Plan allocations.

There are reports of job cuts in Jackson County, with layoffs at the SK Battery plant in Commerce: the company that makes batteries for electric vehicles still employs more than three thousand workers.

Police in Gainesville have released the name of the man who was killed in a vehicle vs pedestrian accident in Hall County: Omer Morris was 37 years old. Police were, at last report, still trying to find the driver of the vehicle that struck Morris, who died after being taken to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. The wreck happened this past Sunday night on McEver Road in Gainesville. Police say they’re looking for a dark-colored SUV that was, at the time of the incident, pulling a trailer.
