Area briefs: early voting begins, GSP probes deadly crashes

Three weeks of early voting are underway today, with voters in Athens casting ballots in advance of Athens-Clarke County Commission and Clarke County School Board races that will be decided on May 21.

Today is the last day of spring semester classes at the University of Georgia. UGA students begin their spring finals on Wednesday. Spring graduation is set for May 10.

There is music this evening in Athens. The University of Georgia’s Philharmonia concert is set for 7:30 in UGA’s Performing Arts Center.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Business Development and Workforce Support Task Force, a 12:30 session at the Snipes Building on Barber Street.

This evening’s meeting of the Madison County Commission is set for 6 o’clock at the County Government Complex in Danielsville.

The City Council in the Elbert County town of Bowman is telling residents to expect higher water bills, with a new plan to set separate rates for commercial and residential water customers.

We have this morning the name of the Winder woman killed in a crash on Highway 82 in Barrow County: the Georgia State Patrol says 20 year-old Jasmine Hulgan was killed when her car spun off the road and hit a tree. The single-vehicle accident is under investigation.

A Banks County man is killed in crash in Homer. It happened on Highway 51. The man died after being taken to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

The GBI says a Hall County teenager is facing child porn charges: Sean Millwood is 19 years old, from Clermont.

Police in White County were, at last report, looking for a suspect in the armed robbery of a convenience store in Cleveland. A clerk says a man who claimed to have a gun stole cash from the store on Helen Highway in Cleveland. No injuries were reported.
