Area briefs: emergency drill at airport, Council meeting at UGA

Athens-Clarke County government departments took part in a full-scale emergency drill Tuesday at Athens-Ben Epps Airport, working with emergency response units from the University of Georgia on what was UGA’s Campus and Community Day.

A suspect in a shooting in Stephens County is arrested in Athens: Athens-Clarke County Police say 20 year-old Cornelius Curry was wanted in an Easter Sunday shooting that left two men wounded in Toccoa. The GBI is in on the ongoing investigation.

There is an afternoon meeting of the University of Georgia’s University Council, a 3:30 session at UGA’s Tate Student Center.

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Assessors meets this afternoon, 4 o’clock at City Hall.

The citizens committee that is looking at plans for sales tax-funded upgrades to the Prince Avenue Corridor meets this afternoon in Athens, a session that starts at 3 o’clock.

Jackson County Commissioners are considering a property proposal: the Jackson County School Board is looking to sell 70 acres off Highway 332 in west Jackson, land that could be used for a new County recreation park.

Delays in a rezoning vote will lead to a delay in the scheduled opening of a new charter school planned for Braselton. Jackson County Commissioners have again postponed the rezoning decision and now school officials say the campus that had been slated to open this fall won’t begin operations until next year.

A vehicle belonging to a man missing from Baldwin County is found in Elbert County: 24 year-old Dawson Lee was reported missing on April 17.

There is a guilty plea from a man in Hart County: Lawrence Montgomery of Hartwell was facing counts of elder abuse and financial fraud after he was accused of using his elderly mother’s Social Security money.

It will mean about 200 new jobs for Franklin County: Virginia-based home construction firm NVR is setting up shop in Lavonia.

This is finals week at Brenau University in Gainesville, where students are taking final exams in advance of spring graduation exercises are set for May 3 and 4.
