Area briefs: food distribution in east Athens, burglary probe in Arcade

Today is a food distribution day for the East Athens Development Corporation, with food handed out between 10 and 2 at Corporation headquarters on McKinley Drive in Athens.

The committee that is looking at plans for a tax allocation district for the West Broad Street-Hawthorne Avenue area of Athens meets this afternoon: it’s a 2:30 session at Athens City Hall.

Today is an early release day for high school students in Athens: the students at Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals high schools are out of class at 12:45 this afternoon. Tomorrow is the last day of class in schools across the Clarke County School District, with the holiday break beginning Thursday.

Police in Arcade were, at last report, searching for suspects in a robbery attempt at a convenience store in Jackson County. Store surveillance video shows two men breaking a glass door at a store on Athens Highway in Arcade. They fled the scene after being confronted by store employees.

A wrong-way driver gets the blame for a deadly crash in Lumpkin County: the Georgia State Patrol says William Lingerfelt was killed in the wreck. He was 22 years old, from Dawsonville. State Troopers say he was driving west in the east-bound lanes of a road near Dahlonega. Two other people in a second vehicle were injured and were, at last report, hospitalized in Gainesville.
