Area briefs: Gang Investigators conference continues at Classic Center, Hoschton gets acting mayor

The Georgia Gang Investigators Association Conference that began Tuesday continues today at the Classic Center in downtown Athens.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Assessors, a 4 o’clock session at Athens City Hall.

Athens Tech says course registration for fall semester classes is underway, with a link on the Athens Tech website. First day of fall classes at Athens Technical College is August 21.

Commerce is the market for a new fire chief: Chief Kevin Dean says he is retiring after more than four decades with the Fire Department in Commerce.

There is acting mayor in Hoschton, where Lauren O’Leary has stepped down to move out of town: City Councilman James Lawson will serve as the interim mayor in Hoschton.

There are animal cruelty charges for a Hall County teenager: Hector Pascual is 18 years old, from Gainesville. He’s accused in the strangling deaths of two chickens. Pascual was booked into the Hall County jail.

There is an ongoing theft investigation in Hall County, where someone stole a trailer used by the band at West Hall High School. The school in Oakwood says it’s a recently purchased trailer that came with a price tag of $5 thousand.

Gwinnett County Police say no charges have been filed against a mother who shot and killed her daughter at a home in Lawrenceville. Police say the mother shot 47 year-old Treva Murray in self-defense, shooting after she was attacked by her daughter.
