Area briefs: GOP meeting in Watkinsville, flu and COVID kiosks in Athens

There is music this evening in Athens: world renowned trumpeter Wynton Marsalis plays holiday music at the University of Georgia’s Hodgson Concert Hall. Showtime is 7:30.

Today is a back to class day for students at the University of Georgia, in schools in Clarke and Oconee counties and most other schools around northeast Georgia: students and teachers were out for all or at least part of last week’s Thanksgiving holiday period.

The Northeast Georgia Health System says a kiosk will offer COVID and flu tests. It’s at the Atlanta Highway building that was, until recently, home to an Athens-Clarke County Fire Department station. Other flu and COVID kiosks, where test kits come with swabs and instructions, are in Jefferson, Danielsville, Winder, and Greensboro.

Kalki Yalamanchili, candidate for the District Attorney’s post now held by Athens Democrat Deborah Gonzalez, is among the speakers at this evening’s meeting of the Oconee County Republican Party. It’s a 6 o’clock session at the Piedmont Oconee Health Campus on Jennings Mill Road.

There is an evening meeting for Madison County Commissioners, 6 o’clock at the Government Complex in Danielsville.

The School Board in Commerce says it has hired the search firm King-Cooper and Associates to help find the School District’s next superintendent. The current Commerce School Superintendent is retiring. Joy Tolbert says she will step at the end of the current school year, which comes at the end of June.

The Sheriff’ Office is in Gainesville gets a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety: the Hall County Sheriff’s Office says it will $186 thousand to beef up roadway enforcement, looking to cut down on the number of car crashes in and around Gainesville.
