Area briefs include A-CC Commission work session, Elections Board meeting

A local road safety plan and the replacement of Fire Station Five on Whit Davis Road are on the agenda for this afternoon’s Athens-Clarke County Commission work session. Commissioners meet at 5 o’clock at Athens City Hall.

As part of High School Conference Week, today is an early release day for high school students in Athens: students at Clarke Central and Cedar Shoals high schools will be dismissed from classes at 12:45 this afternoon.

Clarke County School Superintendent Robbie Hooker is out with his State of the School District video, acknowledging that standardized test scores for students in Athens continue to lag behind the state averages.

With now less than a month to go before Georgia’s presidential preference primaries, there is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections: it is a 4:30 session at the Government Building on Dougherty Street in Athens.

The new Community Impact Director for the Athens-based United Way of Northeast Georgia says her office is distributing more than $800 thousand in community impact grants, with 27 agencies in Athens and around the region sharing in this year’s allocations. Courtney Ethridge began her job with the United Way of Athens in September of last year.

The state Department of Juvenile Justice holds a jobs fair today in Hall County: it starts at 10 and lasts til 2 at the Youth Detention Center in Gainesville.
