Area briefs include funeral for former Bulldog, new Varsity restaurant

Former Georgia Bulldog and Washington Redskin lineman Len Hauss was laid to rest after a Monday funeral in Jesup: Hauss, who played for the Dogs in the early 1960s and starred for the Washington Redskins into the ‘70s, passed away last week at the age of 79.

They closed in Athens earlier this year, with as-yet unrealized plans to open in Oconee County: now comes word that a Varsity restaurant will open in Floyd County, in an as-yet undisclosed location within the city limits of Rome.

Shoulder widening work on Simonton Bridge Road is scheduled to wrap up today: crews have been working and drivers have been dealing with single-lane traffic on the road in Oconee County since Thursday of last week.

The East Hall Community Center in Gainesville reopens after a Monday closure that was caused by a septic tank overflow.
