Area briefs: Oconee GOP meets, Madison Co Commission convenes

Athens attorney Kevin Epps, a frequent and vocal critic of Clarke and Oconee County District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez, is the featured speaker at tonight’s meeting of the Oconee County Republican Party. The Oconee GOP gathers at 6:30 at the Piedmont Oconee Health Campus off Jennings Mill Road.

There is a heads-up for another week of roadwork in Oconee County, where crews will spend the week on Cherry Hills, Ivywood Road, Elder Mill Road, and Greene Ferry Road; also Ashford Road, McRees Mill Lane, Old Farmington Road, and Kirkland Road in Oconee County. Drivers are told to anticipate delays.

Madison County Commissioners meet tonight, a 6 o’clock session at the Madison County Government Complex in Danielsville.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith is endorsing legislation pushed by Athens state Rep Houston Gaines: Republican Gaines wants a registry for stores that sell vape products in Georgia.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly motorcycle crash in Hall County: Charles Massey was killed in the wreck on Poplar Springs Road in south Hall. Massey was 30 years old, from Gainesville.

Guns and drugs in a car outside the Lanier Career Academy lead to the arrests of two teenagers: the Hall County Sheriff’s Office says the 16 year-old driver of the car and a 15 year-old passenger were caught with two guns and a bag of marijuana.
