Area briefs: pedestrian killed in Athens accident, candidate qualifying ends in Alto

Officials say a young child was shot and killed during a hunting accident Friday morning in Orangeburg County, South Carolina.

Athens-Clarke County Police will investigate a deadly vehicle vs pedestrian accident that happened last night on Atlanta Highway in Athens: a 44 year-old woman whose name has not yet been released was struck and killed.

School’s out in Athens: Clarke County School District students are among the last in the region to begin their holiday breaks. They’ll be back in classrooms on January 8.

A scholarship at the University of Georgia will be funded by a gift from the Ivester Foundation in Gainesville: the scholarship will be named in honor of Hall County poultry industry executive Abit Massey.

The City Council in Jefferson signs off on roadwork, clearing the way for a connector between Sycamore and Gordon streets in Jefferson: it’s a move that will also add parking on Sycamore.

There are two more days of candidate qualifying in Alto: political hopefuls can sign up to run in the March 12 special election to fill the unexpired term of Alto City Councilwoman Carolyn Cabe, who passed away in September. Candidate qualifying ends tomorrow.

Police in Gainesville are investigating a report alleging that someone tried to sell a child at a motel in Gainesville.
