Area briefs: Polar Plunge raises thousands, Commissioners ramp up for controversial vote

A weekend plunge into the lake at Sandy Creek Park, organized by the Athens Rotary Club and its incoming president Kalki Yalamanchili, raised almost $35 thousand for Lydia’s Place, an organization that works with teenagers and young adults facing homelessness after aging out of Georgia’s foster care programs.

We are on the eve of an anticipated Athens-Clarke County Commission vote that would expand regulations on short-term rentals in Athens. Many people in single-family neighborhoods in Athens are complaining about the AirBnB rentals; others are renting homes on a short-term basis to supplement their incomes. One person suffered what were described as minor injuries in a weekend house fire in Hall County. The blaze burned a home on Athens Highway in Hall County. There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
